Title New physics interpretation of W-boson mass anomaly
Abstract The recent CDF measurement of the W-boson mass shows a significant tension with the Standard Model prediction. In this talk, I will first review the current status of the electroweak precision fit and the Standard Model prediction of the W-boson mass. I will then explain new physics implications of the CDF result in a model-independent way using the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT). It is shown that the CDF result can be explained by a new physics contribution to the oblique T parameter, while non-oblique new physics contributions can also relax the observed tension. The latter scenario is studied in our paper arXiv:2204.05965, where the new physics is assumed to affects the W-boson mass via the Fermi coupling constant, and simple extensions of the Standard Model are investigated by introducing an extra scalar, fermion or vector field. I will present the results of our study and discuss which fields are favored by the observed tension.
